Keeping Your
Roses Fresh Longer
Now that you have ordered your roses, how do you keep your
flowers fresh and alive for as long as possible? The answer isn’t filling a vase
with tap water, and putting an aspirin in it. Aspirin doesn’t help your roses at
all, and the tap water will only shorten their life span. What will work?
Well there are two things you can do to extend your roses
lifespan. First thing, you will need about 8 ounces of distilled water, and a
soil pH tester. Use your soil pH tester to check the pH level of the water
(which should be about 100 F). Once you manage to get a pH reading, start adding
drops of lemon juice until the pH level reaches 3 and then stop adding lemon
juice.
Once you are finished with the following, place your cut
roses into the water-lemon juice solution, and place your roses and solution
into the refrigerator. Leave your stemmed roses in the solution for at least an
hour.
When your roses look fresh and crisp, remove them from the
refrigerator. At this point, you will need a preservative of some sort. You can
buy flower preservatives at your local nursery, or you can substitute with Karo
syrup.
Add Karo syrup to your water-lemon juice solution until the
pH level reaches 3.5. You water temperature should still be around 100 F. Now
your fresh roses are ready to be put on display and should last for a good 8-10
days. Enjoy!
